The BOX Seat 903 retractable model provides seating for spectators at the Townsville International Sports Centre, Australia. The construction of the centre was part of a $25 million redevelopment and, in order to secure investment for the project, planners were to create a highly versatile facility incorporating economical designs, construction and materials. The BOX Seat retractable system is exemplary of this; providing comfortable yet compact seating whilst maintaining the versatility of the space.
Choosing a retractable seating option enabled the planners to reduce build size; the centre is functional as a three-court complex but, for featured games, seating can be brought out across the other two courts and retracted at the end of the match. A perfect method of utilising functional space without having to build additional ‘purpose specific’ seating.
